Seasonally rising supply and slower demand because of Labour Day plant closures weakened U.S. hog prices last week.

Pork prices continued to slip from the record high of $96.74 US per hundredweight set Aug. 24.

Iowa-southern Minnesota cash hogs delivered to plants fell to $59 per cwt. Sept. 3 from $60.50 Aug. 27.

The U.S. pork carcass cut-out value fell to $91.31 Sept. 3, down from $93.51 on Aug. 27.

U.S. federal slaughter to Sept. 3 was estimated at 2.12 million, down from 2.11 million the previous week.

A study from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont. has found that meat consumption doesn’t increase the risk of death.

The Canadian Bison Association did not report last week.

On Aug. 27 Grade A bulls in the desirable weight range were $2.80 to $3 per pound hot hanging weight. The top end of the price range was a 10-year high.

Grade A heifers in the desirable weight range were steady at $2.75 to $3.

Older than 30 month animals and those outside the desirable weight range may be discounted.

Slaughter cows and bulls were $2 to $2.20.

LAMBS STEADY TO HIGHER

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported 1,425 sheep and lambs and 69 goats traded Aug. 30. All classes of lambs and goats sold steady to higher. Sheep were steady.

At Olds Auction in Olds, Alta., ewes were $75 to $120 per head in the Aug. 31 sale and feeder lambs were $80 to $130 per head. Nannies were $70 to $120 and billies $70 to $140.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 1,229 sheep and 436 goats traded Aug 30.

All quality animals sold steady. Fat lambs were a little softer and there was some discounting for off types. Goats were steady.

Lambs lighter than 70 lb. were $140- $171 per cwt.

Lambs 70-85 lb. were $120-$154, 86-105 lb. were $122-$142 and those heavier than 105 lb. were $122-$139. Rams were $70-$100 per cwt. Cull ewes were $62-$81.

Good kid goats heavier than 50 lb. were $175-$212 per cwt. Good packages of Nubian doelings weighing 55 lb. were $300-$317 per cwt. Nannies were $68-$80 per cwt.

Mature billies were $99-$125.
