Hogs rally

Hog demand was stronger than expected, helping lift hog cash prices.

Packer margins remained positive, although pork carcass cut-out values fell from the start of the week.

Iowa-southern Minnesota cash hogs rose to $37.50 US per hundredweight Sept. 4, up from $34 Aug. 28.

The U.S. pork carcass cut-out value fell to $54.04 Sept 4, down from $57.90 Aug. 28.

U.S. federal slaughter to Sept. 5 was estimated at 2.256 million, up from 2.196 million the previous week. Compared to the same week last year, slaughter was up 10 percent.

Bison prices steady

The Canadian Bison Association said marketers report increased offerings of slaughter A1 bulls and heifers for current and fall delivery.

Grade A youthful bulls in the desirable weight range in Canada were $2.50-$2.70 per lb. hot hanging weight. Grade A youthful heifers were $2.35-$2.55 per lb.

Cull cows and bulls sold from $1.30 to $1.40 per lb. Weight, quality, age and delivery location affect final price.

Sheep steady

Ontario Stockyards reported 1,376 sheep and lambs and 34 goats traded Aug. 31. Well-fed lambs sold well. Sheep and goats were steady.
