The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s June 25 hogs and pigs report showed the U.S. herd at a three year low of 64.4 million, down 3.6 percent from a year ago. The report should support prices this year, but it also indicated herd rebuilding that should lead to larger pig numbers in 2011.The breeding supply was slightly above the high end of trade estimates. Also, the pigs-per-litter number was record large at 9.81.Market-ready hog supply tightened in the cash market, , but U.S. packer demand fell on weak pork demand.Iowa-southern Minnesota cash hogs delivered to plants were $60 US per hundredweight June 25, steady with June 18.The U.S. pork carcass cut-out value was $84.26 June 25, up from $83.74.U.S. federal slaughter to June 26 was estimated at 1.96 million, down from 2.01 million the previous week. Ontario Stockyard reported that 771 sheep and lambs and 172 goats traded June 21. All classes of lambs sold at prices $10 Cdn per cwt. higher. Sheep and goats sold steady.There was no bison report this week.
