Pork fell sharply after setting a 16 month high the previous week.

That and an ample supply of hogs pressured U.S. hog prices lower.

Worries continued about the U.S.-Russia chicken trade dispute that could force more chicken on the domestic U.S. market.

U.S. and Russia may be close to a deal that could restart exports of U.S. pork to that country, the head of U.S. Meat Export Federation said.

Generally falling commodities added to the negative tone.

Iowa-southern Minnesota cash hogs delivered to plants were $49 US per cwt. Jan. 29, from $51 to $52.25 Jan. 22.

The U.S. pork carcass cut-out value plunged to $69.19 Jan. 29, down from $77.18 the week before.

U.S. federal slaughter to Jan. 23 was estimated at 2.182 million, up from 2.176 million the previous week.

The Canadian Bison Association Grade A youthful bulls younger than 30 months in the desirable weight range were $2.25 to $2.55 Cdn per lb. hot hanging weight.

Grade A youthful heifers younger than 30 months in the desirable weight range were $2.10 to $2.40.

Older than 30 month bulls and heifers were about 10 cents lower than the younger animals.

Slaughter cows and bulls sold from $1.40 to $1.50 hot hanging weight.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported 362 sheep and 78 goats traded Jan. 25. Sheep and goats were steady for the quality on offer.

Lambs lighter than 70 lb. were $150-$172 per cwt. Lambs 75 to 85 lb. were $150-$171, 86 to 105 lb. were $135-$155, and those heavier than 105 lb. were $120-$144.50.

Rams were $73-$90 per cwt. Ewe culls were $72-$90. Bred ewes were $85-$120.

Good kid goats heavier than 50 lb. were $150-$200 per cwt. Nannies were $65-$85 per cwt. Mature billies were $102.50-$140. Ontario Stockyards sold 1,112 sheep and lambs and 82 goats Jan. 25. Light lambs fell $5-$10 per cwt. Heavy lambs, sheep and goats were steady.
