Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts on March 7 was $67.51. It was $66.79 Feb. 28.

U.S. hogs averaged $88.89 on a carcass basis March 7, down from $90.02 Feb. 28.

Feeder market continues the climb

For the week ending Aug. 30, Western Canadian feeder cattle markets traded $4-8 per hundredweight higher on average.

The U.S. pork cutout was $98.36 per hundredweight March 7, down from $98.42 Feb. 28.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to March 7 was 2.302 million. It was 2.438 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.334 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the March 8 Signature Four price was $229.11 per 100 kilograms, up from $227.46.

The March 8 Hams Marketing cash price was $227.11, while on March 1 it was $223.84. HyLife was $243.50 this week and $239.60 March 1. OlyWest was $231.40, up from $231.10 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $241.20, from $239.50, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $243.54 this week. On March 1 it was $240.69.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $570-$600 per cwt., hot hanging weight, for finished bulls and $535-$600 per cwt. for finished heifers.

Prices for mature bulls were not available, while mature cows were $425-$450 per cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$440-$460 per cwt. for bulls and $425-$445 per cwt. for heifers. Prices for mature bulls and cows were not available.

All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were C$3 per pound for bulls and $2.70 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better.

The mixed live animal price was not available.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 199 sheep and 450 lambs sold March 3.

Beaver Hill Auctions at To field, Alta., reported that 1,088 sheep and 452 goats sold March 3.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $390-$450 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $390-$460, 70-85 lb. were $375-$438, 86-105 lb. were $335-$400, and 106 lb. and heavier were $300-$370. Wool rams were $190-$265 per cwt. Cull ewes were $160-$300.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $320-$395, 55-69 lb. were $360-$420, 70-85 lb. were $350-$405, 86-105 lb. were $330-$395 and 106 lb. and heavier were $280-$345. Hair rams were $230-$260 per cwt. Cull ewes were $250-$345.
