A new $3 million scholarship for post-secondary students has been named after Jason Lang in memory of the 17-year-old Taber high school student killed in a school shooting last April.

The scholarship will distribute $3 million annually to Alberta’s top post-secondary students who achieve an average of 80 percent or higher in their first year of any undergraduate program. About 3,000 full-time students should meet the requirements annually. They must attend an Alberta school offering a two-year program. The institutions will automatically determine those who qualify and the first awards will be confirmed by Oct. 15.

The scholarship is administered by the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund. Since it began in 1981, the fund has awarded more than $185 million to more than 134,000 students.
