Saskatchewan Wheat Pool has purchased a southern Alberta feed mill at Picture Butte.

Butte Feeds, a privately owned company, transfers July 1 to Cangro, a subsidiary of the pool. Operations will continue under the name Butte Feeds, producing rations for cattle, hogs and other livestock.

The mill is in the heart of the Alberta feeding industry and produces more than 65,000 tonnes per year, said Cangro chief operating officer Les Rankin in Winnipeg.

“It fits into our objective of growing on the Prairies,” he said.

This company joins the chain of feeding operations run by Cangro. Last month the company bought a 50 percent share in Aggasiz Feeds at Dauphin, Man. It runs a Winnipeg firm which pellets grain screenings and plans to soon announce a building project in Saskatchewan.

Cangro also runs a fish farm at Diefenbaker Lake that processes two million pounds of rainbow trout annually for the American restaurant trade.
