The Ramsays’ win is the first time a Sask. bull has been named grand champion at the 119-year-old Calgary Bull Sale
For the first time ever, a Saskatchewan bull was named grand champion at the Calgary Bull Sale held March 7.
Consigned by Cal and Marilyn Ramsay of Cutknife, Sask., the bull sold for $20,500 to XTC Ranches and Wasko Enterprises of Eastend, Sask.
The 2017 bull named Carlrams A 81Y Royal Lad 138E was also the high seller of the 119th annual sale.
Entering the long-running event was something Cal Ramsay always wanted to do. Coming away with the grand champion banner was gravy.
“I will never be able to do this again,” he said.

He and his family have about 100 purebred Hereford cows plus a commercial herd. His father started with purebreds in 1948 and Cal entered the business in 1970.
Carlrams Ranching also entered a second bull, which sold for $13,500.
Reserve grand champion was awarded to Nelson Hirsche Purebreds of Del Bonita, Alta. GH Eagle’s Rock 599E sold for $15,250 to Parkview Farms of Falun, Alta. Included in the sale string was GH 542S Mr Explosion ET 59E, grand champion Hereford at the 2018 Canadian Western Agribition in Regina. That bull will be going to Wyoming and sold for $13,000.
This year, 97 Hereford bulls were on offer and averaged $6,907.
The ranch horse sale offered 13 head to average $6,912.
