Recreation trail plans continue to draw fire

Controversy continues over the network of recreational trails that

crisscross Alberta.

Delegates to the Alberta Beef Producers annual meeting said they want

clear, consistent rules for maintenance and access to trails.

“There was a lot of trail operation that has been happening and doesn’t

have the same regulations,” said Ray Danyluk, MLA from Lac La Biche-St

Paul.

The province has 15,000 kilometres of trails and more are being added.

The provincial government appointed a committee earlier this year to

look into the issue. Its report is due in February.

During the committee’s public hearings, people said they want

regulations regarding upkeep and safety on the trails. They also

requested a registry and trail maps.

Delegates to the beef producers’ meeting said they want guarantees that

a trail won’t cut landowners off from their property. Other priorities

include maintenance and determining who pays when damage occurs on

public or private land adjacent to a trail.
