Producers take cows to computer

A Saskatchewan veterinarian hopes a new website can connect livestock producers who want to showcase their herds, join forums or advertise on a classified site.

“Through this website, producers can showcase their own operation and they can possibly market their own livestock through it,” said Henry McCarthy, a mixed practice veterinarian at Wawota. Working with Calgary partners, they launched www.onespotlivestock.ca last year and recently revised it.

It is designed for those who want to use social media to find new buyers for their cattle or chat with consumers who want to know where their food comes from.

“As a producer, I want to know where my food is going so I can do a better job,” he said. “If the consumer can’t make a connection with me, how can I do things to address their concerns about the environment or animal welfare or animal health?”

Producers can join the site for free to present their herds, announce when their calves are going to the auction for interested bidders or to sell them directly to consumers.

There are forums on price setting, news comments, accounting tips, succession planning, animal genetics and health questions.
