Body condition scoring is an easy method of evaluating body fat relative to body muscle for all breeds of horses. It is done by an assessment of visible fat and by palpating six areas (shown below). An ideal body condition score for non-lactating mares is 5 or higher. Active stallions should have a condition score of 6 or 7 before the breeding season to ensure they don’t become too thin during breeding season.
