Organic egg producer appeals

An Alberta organic egg producer fighting against the supply management system plans to appeal to the Alberta Marketing Council.

Rosemary Giberson of Strathmore, is in a dispute with the Alberta Egg Producers Marketing Board because it says she is producing more than her allotment of eggs without a quota.

A court date of June 15 was set, but Giberson hopes the council will step in and give her a dispensation.

“We’re requesting a stay until the appeal is heard by the tribunal,” she said.

The council oversees marketing boards and commissions in Alberta.

The Alberta Egg Producers Marketing Board decided to start legal action against the farm but would not comment. The board has won against other producers in the past for not having an egg quota, said general manager Susan Gal.

Under supply management rules, an egg quota is required if a farm has more than 300 birds. Giberson has 600 hens and ignored a previous order to reduce her flock.

She and her husband Dean believe they supply a unique product serving the organic niche.
