A newly approved oats-based strychnine bait will be available this spring for producers wanting to control gophers on their land.
The bait can be picked up from a number of municipalities in the first week of April. Saskatchewan municipalities will also co-ordinate distribution.
The registered product comes in a ready-to use formulation containing extra moisture for improved bait acceptance and palatability. It should be used within the week it was obtained and requires only one to three teaspoons per burrow.
The burrow is covered after the bait is applied. It must not be scattered around the hole and must be kept away from children and non-target animals.
It sells for $75 per 2.5 gallons of mixed strychnine. Dry strychnine is also available from farm supply stores.
