REGINA — The generosity of rural people who appreciate the value of helping out neighbours was evident during an Angus sale at Canadian Western Agribition.

Shaun and Amanda Bryce decided they wanted to do something for their wider community by raising money for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Shaun approached the Bohrson Marketing team who manage the Power and Perfection sale and they agreed to help find sponsors to buy a donation heifer.

The heifer led off the sale held Nov. 23 and earned $20,000 for the children’s hospital.

Canada’s simplified BSE testing program shows good uptake

Going by the number of submitted material samples so far, cattle producers’ response so far to an updated national surveillance program for BSE is encouraging for Canada’s CFIA.

“It was very generous of everybody to do that,” he said.

“I see people in my community and friends who had sick kids who had to use the hospital so we felt we wanted to give something back to the community,” said Shaun, who owns about 70 cows at Prime Angus at Arcola, Sask.

He and his wife have been fortunate and none of their three children have had to go there.

“I am totally prepared to do that every year and donate a heifer in the sale to go to different charities,” he said.

“You have to try and give back. If I can help one family and ease the burden or find a new technology to help a child, that is worth more to me than anything else,” he said.
