The inventor of the hog sled is the recipient of the first Alberta Farm Animal Care award of distinction for innovation.

Darren Malchow, an animal health inspector for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, received the award for his work in humane transportation of animals in the last decade.

Malchow invented the sled on his own time after he became concerned over the way downer hogs were moved at slaughter plants.
