REGINA – When Craig Flewelling heard his name announced as the winner at the Canadian Western Agribition supreme bull show, he couldn’t believe his ears.
“It’s a dream and you never expect it,” he said.
Flewelling, who lives at Bowden, Alta., has been in the polled Hereford business since 1978, working with his wife Doreen and son Curtis. He is also a busy beef sales manager and crisscrosses the country managing sales, providing publicity, advice and ring service for several breeds. He and partner Ted Serhienko also publish Hereford Today magazine.

The bull, named HF 4L Beyond 36N, is owned in partnership with Jay Holmes of Siemens, Sask., Double J Polled Herefords of Maidstone, Sask., Pine Ridge Polled Herefords of Linden, Alta., and Ebbx Wonderview Polled Herefords of Australia.
Flewelling bred the sire of this bull, which was named grand champion at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto last year.
Besides prizes and a $10,000 cheque, this kind of win elevates the status of both breeder and animal.
“It increases his value because it increases his popularity and exposure,” said Flewelling, who was travelling to Manitoba after Agribition.
In addition to this bull, he showed four other polled Herefords.
