Grandin’s low-stress restraint methods

  • Solid sides or barriers around cattle prevent them from seeing people who get too close.
  • A bovine’s view of an escape pathway must be blocked until it is fully

restrained. This principle does not apply to pigs.

n.Provide non-slip flooring for all species.

  • Slow steady motion of a restraint device is calming to all species.
  • Use the concept of optional pressure.

Sufficient pressure must be applied to provide the feeling of restraint, but avoid excessive pressure that causes pain or discomfort.

  • The entrance to a restraint device must be well lit.
  • Livestock will be calmer if they can see other animals.
  • Minimize noise. High-pitched sound disturbs animals more than low pitched noise.
  • Design restraint devices to avoid uncom-fortable pressure points on the animal’s body.
  • Restrain livestock in an upright position.
