Gardener named Alta.’s royal rep

Lois Hole has been named Alberta’s 15th lieutenant-governor.

She replaces Bud Olson who is stepping down due to ill health. He was installed in April 1996.

Hole and her husband Ted started Hole’s Greenhouses and Gardens Ltd. at St. Albert, near Edmonton.

The family-run company has grown into one of the largest retail greenhouse operations in Western Canada.

Hole is the author of six best-selling books on gardening. Her latest book, I’ll Never Marry a Farmer, is a compendium of life stories, photographs and horticulture information.

Hole is a former school trustee and is honorary chair for the 27th Canadian Congress on criminal justice.

In 1983, she received an honorary doctorate from Athabasca University and, in 1995, she was named Edmonton business and professional woman of the year.

In 1998, Hole was appointed chancellor of the University of Alberta and was recently named a member of the Order of Canada.
