DENVER, Colo. — An Angus heifer born and raised in North Dakota sold for $230,000 to support research and junior programs within the breed.
Named SAV Emblynette 5368, the young female came out of the Schaff Angus Valley program owned by Kelly and Marty Jo Schaff, fifth generation ranchers at St. Anthony, N.D.
The donation heifer was the lead offering at the 110th National Western Stock Show Angus bull sale held Jan. 13 in Denver. Money raised is directed to junior activities, scholarships and Angus based research. The buyers, Herbster Angus Farms of Falls City, Nebraska, are long-time supporters of the program and have purchased the donation heifer four times before.
The donation heifer sale has been running since 1980 and has raised nearly $2 million.
During the Angus bull show held Jan. 13, two yearling bulls won the top honours. The grand champion was the entry of Conley Cattle of Sulphur, Oklahoma, and Piper McKinley Cates of Moduc, Indiana.
Reserve was from Double Diamond Angus of Christman, Illinois.
Canadians also received some attention, winning the reserve senior championship with a bull named PM Thunderstruck 22’13. Bred by Tanya Belsham of Houston, B.C., the 2013 bull is now owned by Vos Vegas Farms of Plainfield, Ont., Ryan Currie of Quebec and Hoffman Ranch of Thedford, Nebraska.

Brittany Papenhuyzen of Stony Plain, Alta., was the lone Canadian at the Limousin show and garnered a division championship with her black bull named Cottage Lake Big Star. Born in 2014, it tied for Canadian Limousin show bull of the year and won grand champion honours at the 2015 Canadian Western Agribition and Olds Fall Classic. It was also supreme bull at the 2015 Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. It is owned in partnership with Cottage Lake Livestock, Boss Cattle Co. and Brady Scott of Saskatchewan.
