Change made to how BSE is announced

Future BSE cases in Canada will not be reported until the disease has been confirmed at the world reference laboratory in Winnipeg.

All new cases will be reported on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website and additional material or technical briefings will be provided only if there is new information about BSE.

Canada has had eight cases since 2003 and suspicious samples were announced before the final confirmatory tests.

Final reports on each investigation will also be posted on the agency website.

This is common practice among other BSE infected countries, said an agency News release

news.

So far this year, nearly 40,000 tests have been conducted with five positives announced. The minimum target is 30,000 per year.
