One of Canada’s largest meat processing plants will receive $3 million over two years in an attempt to increase the amount of beef exported to Asia.

Cargill Meat Solutions of High River, Alta., will use the government money to help improve efficiencies in its warehousing systems to lower the overall operating cost of the facility.

The funding is expected to help meet the ever-changing demands and requirements of export shipping.

“The project, coupled with Alberta’s large volume of age verified cattle, will result in improved logistics to export markets,” said Cargill Meat Solutions general manager Scott Entz. “We are committed to helping increase access of Alberta beef to Asia.”

The money is from the federal-provincial Growing Forward program but routed through the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, designed to make Alberta beef producers more competitive.

In a news release, Alberta agriculture minister Jack Hayden said the modernization of Cargill’s High River plant will benefit producers by increasing exports to Asian markets.
