Construction will begin immediately on the expansion of Cargill’s Sun Valley Food beef manufacturing plant outside Edmonton.

The frozen beef patty plant plans to expand by 30,000 sq. feet, almost doubling its capacity, said Pilar Cruz, general manager for Sun Valley Foods in Spruce Grove, Alta., after the Oct. 20 groundbreaking ceremony.

Alberta Agriculture has approved a grant for up to $1.5 million for the expansion as part of its Beef Product and Market Development Program designed to help stimulate further processing in the province.

“This significant expansion is a huge vote of confidence for the safety and quality of Alberta’s beef supply,” said Alberta agriculture minister Doug Horner in a News release

news.

Cargill bought the beef manufacturing plant in 2004 from Caravelle Foods.

Cruz said the number of staff should increase from its present 55, with a goal of eventually expanding to two shifts.
