RED DEER, Alta. — Distributors say canola seed is selling well.

Top-yielding varieties like Hyola 401 are sold out, says Nick Underwood of the Canola Council of Canada.

UGG’s Proven Seeds representative said the company is sold out of the Delta variety of canola and he expects some of the other popular varieties to go quickly as well.

At Saskatchewan Wheat Pool’s seed division a big run on canola has occurred with its top lines like Legend and Legacy being spoken for, says Bob Whiting.

The run on seed bookings has started earlier than previous years. People who haven’t sown canola before are placing early orders for seed, he says.

Alberta Wheat Pool’s Keith Martin also says there has been a good run on seed with producers ordering much earlier than in the past.

“It appears that producers are recognizing the fact that acreage is probably going to be up in the 1994 crop year and they’re securing their seed supplies earlier this year.”
