RED DEER – As a founding member of the Western Canadian Classic dairy show, Carol Wright has seen this junior event grow from a modest affair into five days of fun and education for young dairy enthusiasts.

The event is offered to specially selected young people from western Canadian junior dairy breed programs and 4-H projects.

This is the cream of the crop and it is the premier junior dairy show in Canada, Wright said.

The first show was held in Saskatoon in 1985.

This year, 110 young people aged 12-21 arrived in Red Deer for showmanship and conformation shows and educational and social events.

On their own

No adult help is allowed as entrants clip, groom and prepare their heifers for show, said Colleen Fornwald of Arcola, Sask.

Her 19-year-old daughter Jody later won the grand champion conformation. The grand champion showman was 21-year-old Marcus Healy of Rimbey, Alta.
