Alberta auction markets will deliver up-to-the-minute livestock news to customers by the end of the month.
Communications officials from Alberta Beef Producers and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association will help install large, flat screen televisions at Perlich Bros. auction mart in Lethbridge and Vold Jones Vold in Ponoka. The TVs will deliver the latest agriculture news, government announcements, market prices, regional weather reports and auction information.
“We want to get fresh news out to people,” said Brent Carey, head of the ABP communications committee.

“Both organizations have a newsletter, but sometimes the validity of the news is questioned by producers because it is old news,” he said.
The organizations also hope this news format will deliver the facts quickly to as many people as possible to dispel rumours and speculation.
“This gives you the opportunity to get the straight goods out to everybody.”
News will be presented in print form to start and is delivered via the internet. The CCA communications department will compile the packages.
The pilot project will look at what information is best suited to be broadcast in this new way. Once the systems are working well at the two sites, the plan is to expand to all Alberta markets and eventually offer the service nationally.
The CCA and ABP are paying for the program and additional funds have been requested from the Alberta Livestock and Marketing Agency.
