A two-day illegal walkout last week among Alberta employees at hospitals and long-term care facilities ended with a two-year agreement providing eight percent wage increases for the 10,000 workers involved.
Alberta Union of Public Employees accepted a government mediator’s recommendation on May 26 that provides raises for licensed practical nurses, nursing attendants and other hospital support staff at 159 facilities.
As of April 1, 2000, licensed practical nurses receive a four percent increase and a further four percent on April 1, 2001. They also receive a four percent market adjustment on Aug. 1 and another four percent next August.

There will be two additional increments of three percent each for nursing attendants with a personal aide certificate or equivalent.
In addition, shift premiums and weekend premiums are enhanced for all licensed practical nurses and nursing attendants employed by the provincial health authorities of Alberta and the continuing care employers’ bargaining association.
AUPE employees of the Alberta Mental Health Board will receive a four percent increase retroactive to April 1, 2000 and another four percent next April.
