Over the next three years members of the Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada will donate school supplies, mitts, scarves and toques to needy communities.
Valerie Watt, a former president of the Manitoba WI, is in charge of organizing the national project as FWIC’s executive officer.
She said six regions have been selected for the project. She is in the process of recruiting a volunteer co-ordinator for each region to help collect the items.
The regions include British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan-Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. Each region will designate the community it wants to help.
“It’s wherever they feel there’s a need,” said Watt. It could be an inner city school, a rural or northern town.
This project follows up the last FWIC project called Into the North. FWIC’s 15,000 members collected more than 100 boxes of clothes for mothers and children in two Labrador communities.
Cash was also donated and the Into the North project is concluding with a final grant to one of the Labrador towns.
