The Saskatchewan Organic Directorate’s food miles campaign is creating a new “edu-tainment” television reality series in Saskatchewan, tentatively called Dining with a Star.
Organic producers from 15 farms across Saskatchewan are contributing their products and 13 chefs will work with celebrities from the fields of media, arts, sports, politics and entertainment to design specialty menus, access fresh local ingredients and host dinners.
“Across the province and around the world, there is growing demand amongst consumers for local and organic food,” said Bob Balfour, directorate president. “We just want to give consumers an opportunity to put a ‘face to their food’ so to speak by running these events and making the series.”

Canada marked national organic week Oct. 9-16.
A wide range of Saskatchewan farms producing wild rice, geese, lentils, vegetables, lamb and grains are involved in the project.
Filming will take place at restaurants in Birch Hills, Wolseley, Regina, Saskatoon and Prince Albert beginning this month.
Chef Jennifer Willems of New Ground Café in Birch Hills called it an exciting project. “I’m honoured and excited to be one of the chefs invited to participate,” she said.
Marion McBride, Food Miles media co-ordinator, said restaurants were chosen based on their commitment to serving local and organic food.
The public is invited to purchase tickets to these events with proceeds going to support SOD.
The program is funded in part by Saskatchewan Environment’s Go Green Saskatchewan program.
The films are expected to be completed and available on Shaw, Access and SCN early in the new year.
