A Battleford, Sask., 4-H club recently held a four day camp designed to inspire youths to seek professions that will keep them in Saskatchewan farming and ranching.
Rhonda Erickson, a junior 4-H leader, received $4,000 to lead the project from the Saskatchewan Youth Project Awards.
The 4-H camp took place July 6-9 at The WW Barranch south of Battleford. In its second year, it attracted 16 campers ranging in age from six to 18.
In keeping with the 4-H motto of learn to do by doing, the camp provided opportunities to take part in horseback riding clinics involving disciplines such as western riding, English jumping and trail class. It also provided horses for children to learn how to ride.

Stable management, yoga, crafts, an evening trail ride, an agricultural grains seminar, gymkhana events, barrel racing, sheep riding, goat tying, greased pig racing, as well as sports and scavenger hunts were also provided.
Professionals were on hand to give youths a taste of agricultural jobs such as veterinary medicine, farriering and team roping.
Erickson planned the camp to emphasize skill development, and confidence building.
