Sask hall of fame adds new members

Three men and one woman were added to the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame at an Aug. 6 ceremony in Saskatoon.

Elaine Poirier has been a volunteer for many organizations and served two terms as president of the Saskatchewan Agricultural Societies Association. She worked for more than 30 years with the Canadian Western Agribition, using her ease with the French language to serve as a tour guide. She and her husband used to farm at Redvers. She is retired and lives in Battleford where she works on her music and horticulture hobbies.

Communication key to bridging generation gap

Each generation is shaped by the predominant forces at play during their formative years. Acknowledging these influences can improve communication among the generations.

Henry Neufield, who died in 1965, was a businessperson who founded Newfield Seeds Ltd. in 1939 in Nipawin. Neufield served his community as mayor, school trustee and volunteer with the local fair.

Bryan Harvey is a plant breeder who worked at the University of Saskatchewan. He and his research partner developed 50 new barley varieties. Harvey’s two-row Harrington barley set a new standard for malting barley.

Bob Knowles was a plant breeder at the Agriculture Canada research station in Saskatoon from 1941 to his death in 1997. He specialized in forage crops and his varieties include Paddock meadowgrass, Carlton smooth bromegrass and Summit crested wheatgrass.

There have been 187 inductees since the hall of fame was started in 1972.
