A new teaching tool from the Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan is designed to educate children about farming and ranching in Saskatchewan.

Tales from the FACS Farm activity book contains colouring exercises, word games, puzzles and other educational activities focusing on producers’ role in caring for livestock and poultry.

Intended for children from Kindergarten to Grade 3, the book includes materials for teachers in mathematics, health, research, technology, social studies, language arts and science.

The book was developed with educators and is part of a larger project launched in 2008 that introduced FACS puppet characters in live shows at events and libraries across the province.

Agriculture ministers commit to enhancing competitiveness

Canadian ag ministers said they want to ensure farmers, ranchers and processors are competitive through ongoing regulatory reform and business risk management programs that work.

Faith, the animal care specialist, visits the FACS farm in Friendly, Sask., the home of Happy the horse, Precious the pig, Cuddles the chicken, Hilda the beefy heifer and Moona the milk cow.

Faith learns about the farm operations, the family that owns the farm, the work ethic of farming, farm safety and animal welfare. Other facts about Saskatchewan agriculture are also incorporated.

A website specifically for children is also being developed at www.farmanimalfun.ca, featuring interactive games and activities with the FACS farm characters.

The project received funding from Saskatchewan Agriculture and the Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan through the Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food Saskatchewan program.
