In an apt setting, half of the 13 songs on Tom Ehman’s newly released CD tribute to farm families were written on the tractor.
Ehman, who has been a professional musician for 15 years, went back to farming with his dad last year near Craik, Sask.
Farmers need cheering up, said Ehman, but that wasn’t why he recorded the CD.
“It’s more that I had time to do it.”
He may have more song-composing tractor time this spring as he helps seed the 2005 crop. He and his dad usually start by the first week of May and plan to plant canola, wheat, durum, mustard and maybe barley.

The CD started as a tribute to farmers but the theme expanded to talk about the importance of agriculture.
“Food is cheap, affordable and it just shouldn’t be taken for granted.”
This is his third CD, and his first as a solo artist. Ehman said his music is “country alternative” and this is “fairly acoustic” with lots of harmonica and mandolin. His favourite song, is called Could you leave all this behind? and it ties all the other songs together, he said.
