To mark its 100th anniversary in 2010, the Manitoba Women’s Institutes is compiling a cookbook that could include a birthday cake recipe.
The real aim is to use the cookbook as a fundraiser for special events during that year. Neither of the cookbook’s organizers, Enid Clark or Valerie Watt, knew if MWI has ever done a similar provincial project, although they were aware of cookbooks printed by individual branches as well as a national WI cookbook to which MWI contributed.
Each MWI member has been asked to provide two of their favourite recipes and each WI branch asked to provide a short history, quip or hint to add interest to the book. Former members and those from dissolved institutes are also invited to contribute, Watt said in an e-mail.

Rural emergency room closures continue to be vexing problem
Staffing issues are at the root of disruptions and closures in hospital emergency departments, both in rural and urban Canadian locations.
The oldest MWI club is in Morris, which will host the 2010 provincial convention.
“MWI has already put out a history book, so we won’t go overboard on history in the cookbook,” Clark said.
Clark said they hope to receive about 500 different recipes. Deadline for submissions is June 15, 2008.
The recipes will be typed and submitted to the printer, Gateway Publishers of Winnipeg, by mid-September 2008, and the cookbooks will be ready for sale in January. Clark said MWI wants to keep the price in the $10 range and the initial printing will be for 1,000 books.
To submit recipes by phone or fax, contact Clark at 204-849-2071 or Watt at 204-278-3714.
