A man checks on a nest box mounted on one post of an old barbed-wire fence.

Russ Amy has built 60 tree swallow nest boxes that he attached to fence posts around Frank Lake east of High River, Alta.

He checks the nests weekly and does an egg and hatchling count.

His data goes into a database at the Calgary Area Nestbox Monitors Society, which includes about 100 monitors and 5,000 nest boxes. | Mike Sturk photos
