The Alberta Women’s Institute will provide pumpkin seeds to 10,000 Grade 1 to 3 students to address the growing disconnect between food and where it comes from.

Faye Mayberry, AWI’s co-ordinator of the Food and Farmers What’s the Connection project, said most kids are four or five generations away from the farm.

“They have no idea where their food comes from,” she said.

Through the program, WI members provide schoolchildren with seeds, soil and skills to grow the plants while talking about agriculture and food.

WI members will also have a lesson plan they can follow that will help students understand the importance of agriculture.

“It looks like it’s a good fit for WI,” said Mayberry.

“One of our aims is to get our members back out into the community. This would give them a bit of exposure,” said Mayberry.
