Goodbye all, thanks for the memories

To say goodbye to those who have read and contributed to the column I’d Like to Know over these many years, is no easy task.

For me, the rewards of writing I’d Like to Know have been many: It provided a thread of continuity and sense of service through times serene or hectic, and it forged links of friendship with readers near and far. Forgive me if there were times when I failed to find answers for you.

Truly, I will miss the challenge of writing the column, but I approach my 80th year. Not years, but yearning to do something a little different has influenced my decision.

The years may be many or few, but my mother lived to 107.

What will I do with the hours?

Recall the words by Tennyson in Ulysses: “But every hour is saved, From that eternal silence, something more, a bringer of new things.”

Some of these things may be as mundane as the correction of a bunion joint, as exacting as writing basic nutrition at a low literacy level, or as challenging as learning something new at the Senior’s Education Centre.

Dear readers, I loved you and must leave you. May this new year bring stability and hope to an uncertain world. And may it bring you personal joy and fulfilment.

Readers are invited to send their memories of the column to Emmie Oddie, c/o The Western Producer, Box 2500, Saskatoon, Sask., S7K 2C4.
