Rural communities that want to host a farm safety workshop for their children should register for help with the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association, based in Winnipeg.

CASA assisted in training volunteers to run 36 such safety camps this year. The deadline for 2007 camp applications is July 15, 2006. While CASA does not offer money to communities for these events, it does provide training and a manual for the adults in charge, said Holly Brownlee, Canadian program co-ordinator.

The two days of training are done by an American farm safety group that has helped volunteers put on these camps for the past 11 years in the United States. Brownlee said CASA’s role is to find groups that want the training and to provide the Canadian context.

Brownlee said the camps usually rely on volunteers, business sponsors and in-kind contributions. The camps are geared at children aged eight to 13.
