Rural Voices, which promotes child care in rural Canadian communities, has developed a program to help parents.

CARS (Communities Achieving Responsive Services) is designed to help residents develop a vision of how they want their community to support families and children.

“Although many communities may face similar challenges, each community is unique in the extent to which these challenges affect service delivery in their community,” said a pamphlet distributed by Rural Voices.

The group plans to train people to be CARS facilitators so they can help their communities fill the child-care gap.

Jane Wilson, a Rural Voices co-ordinator, said the group has training sites in every province and territory except Prince Edward Island.

She said she started out seeking child care and progressed to a leader.

“Every community has those potential leaders somewhere. The goal of CARS is to help the leaders over the rough spots, which may arise during the community development process.”

The training project ends May 31, 2010.
