Highlighting is often used to bring a portion of a written text to your attention. But highlighting can also be used to accentuate your life.

Some people use colored marking pens to accent things, but not cover them up from view. The highlighting quickly catches your attention when you read it again. Printers use different styles or sizes of type to make things stand out and get your attention. Modern computers highlight text in many ways.

We all need to highlight things that happen in life. Life involves so many things or people we can’t remember everything that happens. Some things are important and need to be reviewed. Positive views of ourselves and positive experiences in life need regular highlighting. If you remind yourself about those things which are important, you will remember them better. Too many of us only highlight our mistakes and errors. We focus on what went wrong, whether it was our fault or someone else’s. We brood on things. We talk ourselves into depression, anger or both.

We may not use a colored highlighting marker. We may not use fancy forms of italics and fonts. But we highlight things in our minds the more we allow ourselves to think about them, again and again. But, we must learn not to highlight the frustrations, weaknesses and errors of ourselves and others. We must highlight the positive things we can discover in most experiences of life.

But, life has both successes and “unsuccesses.” Unsuccesses is a created word. It may not be in the dictionary, but I define it as an event which hasn’t reached the point of success. But it isn’t a failure, unless you choose to interpret it as such. You don’t need to experience failure if you treat things that don’t work out as things that have not yet made it to being a success. They may not be a success right now, but if you can see them as being a way to learn for the future, it may lead you to success eventually.

Highlighting successes in life is important. It may be nice when others make agreeable comments about you, but you can’t allow yourself to be dependent on other people for feeling good about yourself. They may not notice or say anything.

Therefore, you need to learn to pat yourself on the back when you have successes, even minor ones. You need to remind yourself about your good events in life. For when not-so-good events occur, and they do for all of us, your highlighted thoughts and memories can get you through those rough times.

Highlighting is not bragging. It is not comparing yourself to others or acting better than them. Highlighting is taking care of yourself by noting and focusing on positive experiences.

If you share your highlighting with others, be honest and humble in sharing your good feelings about yourself and your achievements. If you’ve done well, you deserve to highlight it, both for yourself, and when appropriate, for others.
