The B.C. Women’s Institute raised more than $10,000 for a provincial children’s hospital as part of the group’s 100th anniversary celebrations this year.
The cheque for $10,908 was presented at a telethon in June that raised $15 million in pledges.
Grand Forks BCWI member Jean Johnson said more fundraising is planned for the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“Women’s Institute has been a faithful supporter all through the years, happy to see their original dream grow and prosper,” she said in an e-mail.
BCWI’s support of hospitals began in the 1920s when the group was asked to help a sick child and became charter members of the children’s hospital fundraising efforts.

In 1928, the Crippled Children’s Hospital opened in Point Grey (Vancouver) and developed satellite facilities. A new hospital was built in 1976 and recently plans were announced for an updated facility.
The B.C. Children’s Hospital is the province’s only full-service acute care hospital and serves the one million children living in B.C. and the Yukon.
All children who are seriously ill or injured are referred to the hospital and are either treated in Vancouver or with consultation from pediatric specialists in their home community.
Funds raised by the foundation are used to support B.C. Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the Child and Family Research Institute.
