Two projects have been chosen under British Columbia’s funding program for women in agriculture, says Chris Michell, chair of the committee that is overseeing the program.

The Kamloops rancher said the committee reviewed six applications for the spring deadline and approved a strategic planning session for the B.C. Farm Women’s Network and support for a July to September community market for the Three Valleys Community Development Co-operative near Valemount, B.C. The two projects will use $6,000 of the $200,000 that is available over the next three years.

Rural Manitoba resources slim on natural disaster planning

A study from Brandon University’s Rural Development Institute has found that many rural and small municipalities don’t have the staff or resources to make formal climate plans against natural disaster.

“The committee believes the projects will heighten women’s involvement and participation in agriculture as well as contribute to the overall strength of women in the industry,” Michell said.

The next round of applications is due Oct. 15. For more information, call Michell at 250-374-0282.

“We are hoping to see an increase in volume of applications as there is still a lot of money to be awarded this year,” she said.

“One area that the committee would like to see applied for is the mentoring program. This allocation of money is worth $8,000 and we would really like to see it being used. The idea is that mentoring programs be established with the funds and become self-sustaining for the future.”
