Six Albertans have been chosen to participate in the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Development Program, a national youth initiative announced by the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association last month.
The pilot program includes Cody Schooten, a feedlot operator from Diamond City, who will focus on beef marketing. Rosie Templeton, a university student and a purebred cow-calf operator in Coaldale, has chosen agricultural communications. Samantha Sperber, a university student and cow-calf operator near Rimbey, is exploring seed stock production.
Keith Ypma, a feedlot operator from Taber, is focusing on domestic agriculture and foreign trade while Nanita Blomquist, a commercial cow-calf producer in Big Valley and the Alberta field manager for the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, chose beef marketing.
Ricki Fleming, a senior herd manager for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Animal Disease Research Institute, has selected animal health.
CYL provides training and mentor-ship opportunities to producers between the ages of 18 and 35. The program will go nationwide in 2011.
