Western Producer employees collect writing, photography awards

Western Producer photojournalist William DeKay is likely to have something to declare upon his return to Canada next week.DeKay was on hand in St. Paul, Minnesota, last night for the American Agricultural Editors’ Association’s (AAEA) annual awards night, where WP staffers picked up 19 awards, including the one naming DeKay AAEA Photographer of the Year.”He really stood out in this contest with his great sense of timing,” one of the contest judges was quoted as saying during the presentation of DeKay’s award. “You can identify his images by his vision and unified style.”Also picking up awards were the WP’s Saskatoon-based graphics editor, Michelle Houlden, who picked up a first place award in the Special Issues category for her work on our Water Issue, Camrose-based reporter Mary MacArthur, whose photography earned her a first place finish in the Portrait/Personality category, Saskatoon reporter Sean Pratt, who placed second in the Breaking News category for his reporting on the flax market, and Regina reporter Karen Briere, who picked up an honourable mention in the Unpublished Photos category.A complete listing of all the WP winners can be found below.The AAEA is a professional organization of more than 400 agricultural writers, photographers and editors in the United States and Canada.
