Viterra has opened a new deep sea grain export terminal at Outer Harbor in South Australia.
The facility, which was initiated by ABB Grain Ltd. in 2006, is capable of handling Panamax vessels, which have a cargo capacity of more than 50,000 tonnes.
“Outer Harbor will deliver considerable savings and largely eliminate the necessity for costly two-port loadings that were previously necessary for large ships berthing in Adelaide,” said Viterra chief executive officer Mayo Schmidt.
The terminal is encircled by a 3.5 kilometre rail line that allows continuous unloading of grain arriving by rail from country elevators at a rate of 2,400 tonnes an hour.
Grain can also be delivered by truck at a rate of 800 tonnes an hour.
