Viterra has donated $100,000 to Lethbridge College to support student awards and encourage interest in agriculture as a vocation.

Kyle Jeworski, president of Viterra, said the donation was part of the company’s overall commitment to education.

The money will become part of the college’s campaign to raise $103 million for college initiatives, according to an Oct. 21 news release.

Viterra’s gift will be used to create scholarships, with $25,000 specifically designated for First Nations, Metis and Inuit students.

The first awards are earmarked for those in electrical apprenticeship and business administration.

Agriculture, agri-food groups make bid for spot in Carney’s economic agenda

A coalition of producer and agri-business groups is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to make Canadian agriculture part of his economic agenda.

Lethbridge college president Paula Burns welcomed the student-focused dollars.

“They provide the gift of time and opportunity, allowing students to focus on their studies and get the hands-on training they need to become valued employees and leaders.”

Viterra is also a sponsor of the Cor Van Raay Agricultural Business Risk Management Case competition at the college and the University of Lethbridge. That competition is designed to help educate students about agri-business and the industry on a global scale.

“It’s an exciting time to be in the business of agriculture and our role in helping to feed the world is more critical than ever,” Jeworski said in the news release.

“At Viterra, we’re ready to take on this challenge and are constantly looking to recruit and retain the best people to help us. And it’s institutions like Lethbridge College that prepare them for this opportunity.”
