The University of Saskatchewan recently unveiled plans for a livestock research centre.
The federal and Saskatchewan governments committed $10 million, and the university $7 million for construction costs and land. The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association will also contribute $1 million to the project. Research grants and private partnerships are expected to increase the total funding to $25 million.
The plans for the new Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence were announced July 30.
Some of the work will be in areas of herd health, animal welfare, disease prevention, nutrition, management, public health, environmental stewardship, food safety and security, forage use, breeding and development.
Two locations have been chosen to house the centre: a new Beef Cattle Research and Teaching Unit near Clavet, Sask., and the forage and cow-calf research and teaching unit at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s research farm near Floral, Sask.
Bill Jameson, chair of the SCA, said project will have wide-reaching effects.
“The valuable knowledge generated here will impact livestock and forage producers throughout the province and across the country.”
