Officials expect research at the University of Saskatchewan will help Saskatchewan broiler chicken producers keep diseases in check.
The federal government revealed details of $275,000 in funding to the Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan today.
The investment from the federal Growing Forward initiative, will be used to study avian reovirus and body hepatitis (IBH).
IBH is regularly ranked as one of the most reported diseases in the province. For that disease, researchers will study the effectiveness of vaccines. The other project will focus on how avian reovirus is transmitted.
“Research will be conducted through the University of Saskatchewan by Dr. Susantha Gomis and will assist the industry in improving flock health and reducing the usage of antibiotics,” said Diane Pastoor, chair of the Chicken Farmers of Saskatchewan, in a media release.
