Bulletins alerting Canada’s hog producers to various hog disease risks are now being distributed by the Canadian Swine Health Board. The first in the series, which was announced March 4, deals with vesicular diseases, several of which have identical symptoms in hogs. Blisters caused by these viruses can be a sign of foot-and-mouth disease.“Keeping the industry informed of emerging or potential health threats, how to minimize their risk and how to respond to suspicious observations is critical to the health and viability of our industry,” Florian Possberg, chair of the Canadian Swine Health Board, said in a news release.“It only takes one suspicious incident to shut down a plant or possibly even the border.”According to the release, the one-page bulletins will give a brief description of a health threat, describe the symptoms and talk about how to deal with it. The bulletins are to be distributed to all pork producers and swine veterinarians, and will be available at www.swinehealth.ca.
