A $4 million settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit against XL Foods.

The case stems from the largest food recall in Canadian history.

The recall of 1.8 million kilograms of beef in Canada and the United States was issued after E. coli 0157:H07 was detected in beef processed at the plant at Brooks, Alta., in November 2012.

The plant has since been sold to JBS Canada.

Under the settlement plan approved by an Alberta court  Feb. 17, XL Foods does not admit wrongdoing or liability.

People who ate the meat and became sick and those who bought the beef and threw it away could be eligible for compensation.

Claims must be filed online at www.xlbeefclassaction.com before the Aug. 17 deadline. More information about the settlement can be found online at www.xlbeefclassaction.com or by calling the claims administrator at 800-951-3201.
