WINNIPEG – Farmers in Manitoba are essentially finished seeding their annual crops, with the exception of some greenfeed, the latest Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development crop report said.

Crops saw some beneficial warmer weather during the week ended June 15, which aided emergence and development, and also allowed producers to make good progress on weed control operations.

There was also rainfall reported in many parts of the province, which was generally beneficial for recently seeded fields and forages.

As crops continue to develop, farmers will be monitoring and controlling weeds and diseases when warranted. Some producers have started applying fungicides in winter wheat for leaf disease control and suppression of fusarium head blight.

Issues with flea beetles damaging canola crops in some parts of the province persist, especially in areas where canola crops were not reseeded following the late-May frost, the report added.

The arrival of warmer weather during the week was also benefiting forage crops and pastures, which were showing some signs of recovery from the recent frost events. Dairy producers have started first cut haying operations.
